Single Moms: The Church Has Your Back

Single Moms: The Church Has Your Back

“Nobody’s messing with my sister!!!!” – Pastor Rick Ryan of Destiny Christian Church

I know of this place.  It’s a place where you can find the greatest love of your life.  One that completely commits to you, wants nothing more than to see you thrive, and will not take advantage of you. It’s a place where you are not seen as an object or eye candy, rather a woman that is valued and honored. It’s the kind of romantic love that you dream about.

That place my friend is within a healthy church.  It is the place to bring you into the most intimate relationship of your life, the love of Your Father in heaven.  You might think I’m crazy for saying this.  I promise you, my sister, no matter how you arrived at single motherhood; by divorce, unplanned pregnancy, or by choice, the church is a safe place for you. This is what my church promised to me this past weekend, and this is what God promises for you every day my fellow super hero single mom.

I admit I thought I could handle my single mom life alone, but initially I failed miserably without accountability. I thought I could navigate budgets, parenting, dating, and all that happened was a whole heap of trouble and more brokenness.

The gaping hole in a single mom’s life left from a failed relationship leaves us seeking attention from all the wrong places, typically from those who want to take advantage. There are too many men that are quick to jump in and meet the needs of a single mom, without fully committing to her and her children.

But, I know of someone that will fully commit to you. Instead of running into the arms of the next available man, my sister, run into the arms of a church, and dive deep into the never ending love of Jesus. It’s a safe place.

“I’ll be explicit, then. I am the Gate for the sheep. All those others are up to no good—sheep stealers, every one of them. But the sheep didn’t listen to them. I am the Gate. Anyone who goes through me will be cared for—will freely go in and out, and find pasture. A thief is only there to steal and kill and destroy. I came so they can have real and eternal life, more and better life than they ever dreamed of.” (John 10:6-10) MSG

Funny, I kept looking for someone to save me from single motherhood, when I had it all the time.  My God, and my church family.  You don’t need someone to help you raise your kids and pay your bills, you need to experience real love like this.  Restore Jesus as your first love.  He will never disappoint.

My mission is to create this environment for every single mom.   I pray that every single mom feels loved and protected like this in her church.  In fact, it’s more than a prayer, it’s my mission..

Father, please forgive me for seeking fulfillment anywhere besides You.  Lord, help me to find a church home where I can be not just accepted for who I am, but protected. I ask that today, You would come in and be restored as my first love.  -In Jesus’ name, Amen.

There are also young single moms that got there by losing a spouse to an illness….which is what happened to me almost 10 years ago. At first, the church family was there but as time has gone on I see it as life goes on and they have forgotten. There have been times I have asked for the “men help” such as things with my house and no one has stepped up. Therefore I just choose to do things on my own.
