You can’t change his mind by getting a better body, but you can change yours.

CONFESSION: In the beginning of my single mom life I was that woman in that song. I tried to convince my ex husband to come back to our home. Even after an affair and abandonment. I tried to save my family.  I had to at least try. I wanted to forgive.  I felt it was my duty to try as a woman who loved Jesus, I know that forgiveness isn’t just for me, it’s for me to give away.  My children were 4, 20 months, and 8 weeks old at the time.  I had a part time job, no bank account of my own, and I was breastfeeding.  It was a shot in the dark. 

I began to focus on my body. I had the thought, if I just lost all my baby weight quickly, then he would come back. If I was attractive enough, he would realize that our marriage was worth saving. He would leave “her” and come back home.  

I got serious. I did what any self-respecting suburban housewife does, drops her kids off at preschool and goes to the gym. I’d wake up at 5am to do my morning radio show in Washington D.C., take Emily and Andy to preschool, stick Zoe in childcare, and work out with Charles, my trainer for 90 minutes.

Charles, a Marine and Christian man, was so much more than a trainer, he was a life coach. He helped me lose all the baby weight in record time, but it wasn’t the fix I wanted it to be.  It didn’t bring him back. It did something better, it brought me back. Our problems were deeper than my weight.

I finally realized that love should not be based on appearance, flat abs, and thin legs.  Love is something you give away unconditionally because you adore someone’s heart.

This aha moment hooked me on lifting weights as a release, a way of life, a way to boost my confidence and strength. 

Getting skinny is not going to fix it.  It’s not going to bring him back, and it’s not going to be the reason you find an awesome new boyfriend.  Getting STRONG is going to bring you the confidence you need to find YOU again.

That’s why I love lifting weights.  I love squats, I love bicep curls, I love every lunge because I know every step is making me a strong woman, a stronger mother, and the example I want my children to live up to.  It makes me a stronger leader for my God.

BTW: Lifting weights will NOT make you bulky.  It will however get you a nicer body, toned abs, and a whole lot of strength, confidence, and a positive outlook.
